My Teaching Journey
Nicholas Lalanne joined the American Sign Language (ASL) program at UVM in 2018 following his experiences as instructor at Holyoke Community College and several years as adjunct faculty at different colleges in both Massachusetts and Vermont. He has experience teaching a variety of undergraduate ASL and Deaf Studies courses as well as graduate level practicum and internships.
While pursuing his graduate degree, his coursework included Linguistics, Theories of Languages, and Teaching Methods. He has a strong interest in, and aptitude for, digital pedagogy.
For Lalanne, his ASL students are like seeds planted in a garden. He nurtures them as they learn the language and culture of Deaf people, growing from tiny seeds to become beautiful trees. Seeing them learn and comprehend the language, and sharing a window into Deaf Culture, is what he enjoys. He received the Mosaic Center Outstanding Faculty Award in 2020.

Lalanne presents at numerous conferences annually throughout the United States and Canada on various topics, such as “Secret Ingredients of a Happy ASL Classroom”. He has been a board member of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) since 2022, where he currently serves on the Membership and Council of Representative (COR) committees. He also holds the role of co-director at the Association of Sign Language Vermonters. Previously, he was involved with Vermont Advocacy for Deaf Rights.
